“Decarbonize Your Transportation” was the second panel in the “Systems Change Series,” put on by Families for a Livable Climate and co-sponsored by Climate Smart Missoula. The panel is composed of informed and inspiring individuals working on a broad range of goals to reduce carbon emissions in our transportation systems and support individuals making choices to reduce their own footprint. “Something big is starting to shift,” said Bill McKibben. “After years of effort from activists, there are signs that the world’s financial community is finally rousing itself in the fight against global warming.” McKibben, the founder of 350.org, shared this piece of good news in a New York Times opinion piece a couple of years ago. In light of this trend, he advised, “It would be wise to follow the dollar to see where the future of energy is headed globally.”

The climate is warming; humans are causing it; it’s already impacting Montana, but we can take action and make a difference. Make this your mantra, and straight up ask everyone you know (regardless of party) to vote for strong climate action.

This was the second in our Systems Change series, where we looked at personal actions we can take to make a positive impact, and examine how those actions bridge into system-wide changes. We focused on what’s happening in Missoula and greater Montana to promote the decarbonization of our transportation system, and ways for Montanans to make change in their personal lives, and beyond.

Whether or not you use the bus, you benefit from it. More people on the bus reduces cars on the road, which means less traffic congestion and parking demand. Furthermore, Mountain Line’s development is a critical part of our community’s efforts to reduce greenhouse gas pollution in our rapidly warming world. Emissions matter and impact how much our planet will warm.
