Montana youth make history! Get involved & show your support
The historic climate trial, Held v. State of Montana, is the FIRST youth-led and the first constitutional climate lawsuit to go to trial in the United States. The trial takes place June 12-23, 2023 at the First Judicial District Court, 228 E Broadway St, Helena, MT 59601. Court is scheduled for 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. weekdays.
There will be activities and events throughout the entire two weeks of trial, as well as many ways to show your support. Families for a Livable Climate will be attending and providing activities during the first two days, June 12 and 13. Join us as we support the courageous youth plaintiffs, stand witness to these historic events, and commit to protect the future of all young Montanans through meaningful climate action.
Held v Montana: The Landmark Youth Climate Case

In March of 2020, 16 young Montanans, with support from the nonprofit law firm, Our Children’s Trust, filed a lawsuit against the State of Montana. The plaintiffs argue that the state’s support of a fossil fuel-driven energy system is violating their constitutional right to a clean and healthful environment. The trial is historic: the first ever constitutional climate trial and first ever children’s climate trial in U.S. history.

Climate Advocacy Day draws 300 Montanans
From the Missoulian, Jan. 20: “Under banners saying “Protect Our Home,” climate change advocates rallied at the state Capitol Friday, blasting inaction on climate and demanding politicians move on solutions.
“The Climate Advocacy Day featured a panel discussion with legislators, a climate fair and roundtable with activists, but it was a noon rally attended by nearly 300 people that anchored the event as attendees pushed their message of urgently needed action.” Read the full story.
Kids Want to Put Montana on Trial for Unhealthy Climate Policies

Their lawsuit asserts that Montana — by fostering fossil fuel as its primary energy resource — is contributing to a deteriorating climate and violating the children’s right to a clean and healthful environment guaranteed in the state’s constitution. By doing so, the lawsuit alleges, Montana is interfering with the children’s health, safety, and happiness.
