Air Quality FLAG Program

The Montana Chapter of the Health Professionals for a Healthy Climate are excited to announce a new free program to help raise awareness of air pollution. The opportunity is arranged by the Montana Chapter of American Academy of Pediatrics.

Monitoring outdoor air quality is important, but particularly during fire season when the risk to human health is greatest. Everyone can be harmed by poor air quality, especially children and sensitive groups. The EPA has an air quality monitoring program called the “FLAG Program” to communicate air quality conditions to the community.  The FLAG Program is:

  • Based on the Air Quality Index (AQI).

  • Uses brightly colored flags to communicate air quality conditions.

  • Implemented in schools and organizations to bring awareness to teachers and students on the importance of air quality issues.

  • Helps teachers determine student outdoor activity level based on air quality conditions to support respiratory health.

They would like you and your school or organization or community to participate.  Simply flying the appropriate color flag at your home, business, or school will help inform your neighbors about today’s air quality conditions.

If you would be interested in starting a local FLAG program, please email Mac Nolde, Montana FLAG Program Coordinator, at mac.nolde@montanahphc.org or call (406) 763-1006.

They will provide on-site training, flags, flagpole, and education materials for free. They can also assist with obtaining an air monitor if your town lacks one.
