As wildfires increase in size and intensity due to climate change, the amount of smoke humans are exposed to increases as well. In Montana, we are impacted by smoke from both our local fires and ones as far as California or Canada. It is crucial that we know how to protect ourselves and our families from the potentially harmful smoke. Climate Smart Missoula has fantastic resources to help you protect yourself, your kids, and even your pets! Here are three steps you can take to learn more:

  1. Check out Climate Smart’s Wildfire Website, where you can learn how to prepare for smoke.

  2. July 12-18 is Climate Smart’s Wildfire Smoke Ready Week, in collaboration with Missoula City-County Health Department, Missoula County Office of Emergency Management, United Way of Missoula County, Missoula County Fire Protection Association, and Missoula County Sustainability. Check out the week’s events here to see where you can stop by and learn about “selecting and using portable air cleaners and filters, making your own air cleaner, using your central air handler to keep your indoor air safer, and coping with the double whammy of smoke and heat.”

  3. Don’t have time for the above activities? Watch this super short animated video about the health impacts of wildfire smoke (link will download an mp4 file).
