Indigenous Peoples' Day
Today we are honoring and celebrating Indigenous Peoples’ Day through action.
Acknowledging
We live and work on land that is the original homeland of the Bitterroot Salish, Assiniboine, Apsáalooke or Crow, Blackfeet, Chippewa, Cree, Gros Ventre, Kootenai, Little Shell Chippewa, Northern Cheyenne, Pend d'Oreille, Sioux, and other tribes that interacted with these lands.
Since time immemorial, the people of these Nations held a reciprocal relationship with the land and all of the life that it supported. This land was forcibly stolen through Western colonization.
Learning
We are learning about the people whose homelands we occupy, and preparing our core team for Wrestling with the Truth of Colonization through our partners Common Good Missoula.
We are gathering resources for engaging our children in learning the true history of Colonization.
Giving
Individual leaders are contributing to Indigenous-led groups in Montana. We are exploring how to support and partner with them as an organization in right relationship. If you would like to contribute as well, please consider supporting the following (there are more!):
Reflecting
We are reflecting on our personal history, and organizational history, and how it is complicit with oppression of Indigenous peoples, and how we can deepen our antiracist and anticolonialist practices. We have much work to do, but we’re committed to doing it. We will learn Indigenous history, build new relationships, invest in Indigenous leadership, acknowledge our mistakes, and joinin reparations by contributing resources to support Indigenous people and organizations.
