Building Community for Climate Action in 2020

Happy New Year!

Thank you for taking action on climate in 2019! All of our volunteers at Families for a Livable Climate are grateful to be connected with you in this work. Together, we are organizing families and connecting in community to build political will for strong climate action in Montana.

We can't solve this problem alone, but Montana can lead, and leadership is best when created in community. Thank you for stepping up!

A Family Climate Action Plan for the New Year

Set your intention.

The first week of the New Year is a great time to set your intention for climate action in 2020. As a family, or when you find a few moments alone, you might write a letter to the future to inspire climate action, or share your personal climate story to help document the family impacts of climate change in Montana. Here is a beautiful example of one father's story.

Take concrete action.

Taking action creates hope. Here are 7 concrete actions you and your family can take to make a difference in Montana, and build the hope you need to stay engaged:

1. Sign this Keystone XL petition. Petitions help demonstrate political will. Help us urge Montana's elected officials to withdraw support for this project. Make sure your voice is heard!

2. Share the Keystone XL petition. Make a list of 5-10 Montanans with whom you can share the petition. Grab the text above and shoot them a quick note.

3. Submit comments on NorthWestern Energy's Procurement Plan to the Public Service Commission. These comments are due January 3.

4. Join or start a Friday climate strike. In Missoula, students from our group are leading a strike every Friday at the Missoula County Courthouse (200 West Broadway) from 12 p.m. - 1 p.m.. Join us, and stand with the global movement for change. Not in Missoula? Pick a time and place for your strike, and spread the word. Email us at livableclimate@gmail.com with details to share!

5. Join or start a "Fridays for Action" working group to make consistent time for climate action within your community. It's easy. Pick a day and time you can commit a few hours to climate action, and invite your friends to join you. We will help with ideas for action!

Working groups build a network of concerned families in their community, and coordinate with our other groups on statewide action. In partnership with our allies across the state, this year we will be coordinating on Keystone XL, voter education, the 50th Anniversary of Earth Day, and more! Learn more and RSVP with this quick form.

6. Host a Community Climate Conversation. Simply talking about climate change is one of the most important things we can do right now. Sign up to host a community climate conversation, and invite friends and family who have not yet engaged with climate action but who are concerned about the issue. These free, entry-level workshops are meant to engage and activate. Sign up to host now and we'll put it on the calendar.

7. Support a Montana climate group. You can support our work now through this GoFundMe campaign (nonprofit status in the works), or other great groups working on climate across the state such as Climate Smart Missoula, 350 Montana, Faith and Climate Action Montana, Moms Clean Air Force, or the Sunrise Movement hub in your community. Find the group that moves you, and join the movement!
